Trails and Trees

Updated: Mar 4, 2021

My latest series of paintings is Trails and Trees. I was inspired by the new paths I am taking in my life as a result of the two category 5 Hurricanes which struck my home on St Thomas in the USVI in September of 2017. Because of the damage caused by these storms, I am now living and working in Reedville, Virginia. My "Beautiful on the Edges" series of paintings of the beaches of St Thomas have been put on hold. Many trees were lost and beaches and shorelines changed dramatically. For weeks after the disaster struck, I was unable to focus or paint much of anything. I did find solace in Nature. I also have fond memories of hiking with my friends in the Islands. Many of the trails I enjoy now are in the woods. I have always been passionate about trees and they have always been a consistent subject in much of my artwork. One morning while walking my daughter's dogs in Annapolis, Maryland I was thinking of the choices I needed to make in my new life back on the mainland. I recognized the similarities between that and having to choose a trail to take in a new park when I had no idea of what waited around the corner. One of the definitions of a trail is "a beaten path trough rough country such as a forest of moor." There are so many paths to explore. I intend for each painting in this series to represent the many different feelings created by the paths we choose throughout our lives.
